Women have been historically left out of jobs and opportunities in male-dominated fields such as construction, plumbing, building, and pretty much anything that has to do with manual labor. Simultaneously, women who need these services have had to depend on men to fulfill their needs, which can put them in precarious situations.
CapeAble aims to solve both of these problems by becoming the trusted app for women who prefer to hire women for their handiwork needs. Through creating an easy-to-use platform, we will be offering handiwomen the ability to monetize their skills and creating a safe space for both service providers and the women hiring them.
The idea for CapeAble first came to Cielo when she moved into her latest apartment. As she put some things away in the hallway closet, she caught a glimpse of her dad in the kitchen, helping her install a kitchen counter soap dispenser. She smiled but suddenly realized how different she’d feel if the man in the kitchen wasn’t her dad.
She’d felt this way before. In every state she’d lived in, she’d always needed to hire handyworkers, and they were always men. Far from home and family, allowing men to come into her home filled her with anxiety and fear because as a woman, “you just never know.”
She wanted to hire women who could provide the services she needed, but she didn’t know where to find them. She had an inkling that there were probably many women who felt the same way – but, even better, she was sure there were many badass women, like her sister, Jennifer, who loved working with their hands and would appreciate a community where they weren’t passed over for traditionally male-dominated jobs because of their gender.
Cielo shared this concept with Jennifer, who was very much cognizant of the disparity between men and women in the builder fields and agreed that she would sign up to CapeAble if it existed. After getting their brother, Walter, on board, they had the tech lead they needed to bring this idea to fruition.
